There’s no simple way to explain Retained Reflex problems other than a child needs to outgrow some automatic reflex movements in order to progress with making deliberate movements instead to learn further…
If we have retained reflex movements there are organisations who provide exercises to counteract and learn physically past the auto reflexes that in most children are outgrown.
This page is not to promote any organisation that offers private therapy-excercises but to highlight the possibilities of such a condition. The NHS may provide some support please check.

Mature responses in a child’s psychomotor progress can only occur if the central nervous system itself has reached maturity. The process consist the transition made from brain stem reflex response to cortically controlled response. This study define the occurrence of primitive reflexes in healthy 4–6 years old children and analyze the impact of survived primitive reflexes on psychomotor development.”

Motor control lays the foundation for learning and self-control. We acquire new skills by moving our bodies intentionally. To track visually left to right, to shape consonants in the mouth, and to form letters, we need to have intentional control of the muscles involved. When those muscles obey an unconscious reflex instead of responding to our intention, then the activity is confusing and cannot become an automatic learned skill.
Academic learning depends upon the automation of basic skills at a physical level. If a child fails to develop this automatic motor control, a teacher might observe such symptoms as reversals in reading and writing, mis-articulations, poor impulse control, difficulty reading body language, or unsatisfactory peer relationships, despite good intelligence. Change is unlikely unless the underlying neuro-developmental problem is addressed
